Chapter 16: Section Nine

Lucy's POV

Camille called me twice before I got out of the cab.

I had four missed calls from Ellis, and I let them sit.

"They pulled me," she said, when I picked up. "Eleven months of work, and a girl at the agency read me the email like a weather report."

"Where are you?"

"In my kitchen. On the floor." She sniffed. "I want to post the texts."

"All of them?"

"All of them. His name, his messages, the dates. He told me he'd been single a year, and I want people to see him say it."

I leaned my head against the cold window.

An hour ago I had walked out on a man for keeping the truth from me.

Now I was telling a woman to spill every bit of it, and I had no time to feel like a hypocrite.

"Post it," I said.

"You're sure? You'll be tied to it. They'll say you put me up to it."

"Let them. I'll be there in twenty minutes."

Camille posted at six-fifteen.

She sat on her kitchen floor in an oversized sweatshirt and pressed the button with her thumb while I held her other hand.

Forty screenshots, in order, with the dates.

"I'm so glad you're single, babe," one of Rhett's said. "Been a year. Nobody's waiting for me at home."

Underneath she wrote, "I didn't know she existed. Neither did she know I did. We both believed him."

By eight there were two million views.

By eight-thirty her phone had stopped ringing and started shaking itself across the counter.

Every model she'd ever shared a runway with had commented.

Half of them said, "He texted me the same thing."

"Oh my God," said Camille. "It's not just me."

"No."

"There's a whole row of us."

Then the call came that I had been waiting for.

Her agent said that the agency would see her at nine.

"They want to talk about the morality clause," Camille said, after she hung up. "Rhett's lawyer sent a letter. I breached confidentiality. I damaged the brand."
