Chapter 6: Heated Seat

Rhett didn't answer Ellis.

He stood with his hand still open in the air where the glass had been.

The whole table watched him.

"You wouldn't," Rhett said, very low.

"Try me," said Ellis.

It was the first time in five years I had heard Ellis Flaherty raise his voice, and he hadn't even raised it.

Rhett lowered his hand.

At the head of the long table, Constance stood up.

"Dinner is over," she said.

Nobody argued with her.

Chairs scraped, and the wives gathered their bags, and the man in the bow tie took his napkin off his lap and put it on his plate.

"Rhett," said Constance. "My study."

"Mother, she's staging this."

"Now."

He went.

At the door he looked back at me once.

It wasn't a look I knew.

For two years I had watched his face for storms, but now it was completely unreadable.

Then the door shut.

Camille slumped against the wall beside me, trembling all over.

"I think I'm going to be sick," she said.

"You were incredible."

"I think I'm going to be sick and incredible."

Her agent had a car waiting at the curb, because Camille had thought ahead.

She hugged me on the front steps, hard, with her chin on my shoulder.

"Text me when you're home," she said. "If I get dropped from the campaign, I'm sending you the bill for my rent."

"Send it to Rhett."

"Oh, I will."

She climbed into the car in her green dress and didn't look back.

I stood alone on the steps with the lake wind in my hair.

My whole body felt like I'd drunk four coffees.
