Chapter 16: Not Tonight

I went home alone, because I had said I would.

East Fifth Street was dark and loud with other people's dinners.

I climbed four flights, let myself in, and sat on the floor with my back against the door.

My hands had started to shake an hour ago, in the elevator, and they had not stopped.

I had won.

I kept waiting to feel it.

At ten past eleven someone knocked three times, low on the wood, right behind my head.

"It's me," Reed said.

"I said not tonight."

"I know. I'm not coming in."

I heard him lower himself to the landing, the long slow creak of a tall man sitting on a step meant for a smaller one.

"I brought tea," he said. "Your super told me you have one friend in this building and it's a cat."

"The cat isn't mine."

"He said that too. He said the cat has a better social life than any of us."

I laughed into my knees.

"Why are you here, Reed?"

"To tell you three things through a door. Then I'll go."

"Go ahead."

"One. I didn't hand you the committee. Eight people raised their hands without me."

"I know."

"Two." His voice dropped. "I said it in that room because it was true, and you'd already said it on the floor."
