Chapter 23: Thirty
The signing was in the old locomotive shed, because the chair wanted cameras and a railroad.
The shed had a roof and a hundred years of soot on the beams.
A long table stood under the lights with a white cloth, two stacks of paper and a row of folding chairs.
Behind the chairs stood fourteen reporters and a man with a camera on his shoulder.
I walked in at ten to seven in my black blazer and white sneakers.
Nobody had to tell me where to look.
He was already there.
Reed stood by the table in a charcoal suit he wore, with his hands behind his back.
He saw me and every line of him changed.
His shoulders came down.
His mouth moved, once, around nothing, and he looked at me.
I did not go to him.
I took the seat the chair showed me, and sat with my notebook closed in front of me and my pulse going.
"Ms. Brandvold," the chair murmured, bending to my ear. "You look like someone who slept three hours."
