Chapter 23: Spring At The Walls
Linnea woke on the vault floor in a nest of robes with her cheek on somebody's chest.
It was Torvald's, and he was snoring.
Warm light lay in a bar across her face.
Not the Stone's gold light, but plain daylight, the first she had seen in Emberhall without frost on the glass.
"Majesty." Wren's head appeared at the top of the stairs, with a ring of keys at her belt. "You need to come up."
"Is it the Blight?"
"It's," said Wren, and stopped, and began to laugh. "Come and see."
They climbed to the city wall, all ten of them in whatever clothes they could find.
Linnea stood at the parapet in Espen's green coat and looked north.
The Blight was gone.
Where the white wall had been, there was a long brown field of wet earth, steaming gently in the sun.
A line of green showed along the edges, thin and bright as a needle's thread.
Down in the lanes of Emberhall, people were standing in their doorways with their faces tipped up.
