Chapter 6: Wish Sixty-Two

Wish ninety-two was a dinner.

Perry texted it on Sunday morning, a day after he asked about ninety-one and I did not answer.

All I want is one family dinner at Dorothy's, with everyone at the table, like when we were kids. Please, Jo.

Everyone included Damian.

My mother said she would invite him herself. I told her he wouldn't come.

He came at six-fifteen in the navy sweater I'd bought him, holding a bottle of wine, and my mother kissed his cheek and took the bottle.

"Sit by Jo," she said.

"Mom," Bea said.

"Sit anywhere, Damian."

He sat at the far end, beside Perry's chair, and as far from me as the table allowed.

Perry arrived last. He walked in slowly, with his mother's arm tucked through his, and the table made a small noise of welcome.

My mother had made pot roast. She had made it every Sunday of my childhood, and she had set Perry's place with the blue plate he'd used since he was seven.

For a while it was almost easy.

Perry told the story about the time we flooded the garage with a hose. My mother laughed until she wiped her eyes.

Even Damian smiled once, and then stopped himself.

I watched my husband across the table and thought about his thumb on my wrist.
