Chapter 17: The Gloves Come Off

Calista was sitting alone on the front bench of the Saltmere council hall when we came through the doors.

The hall was almost empty at ten in the morning.

Alpha Boyd had brought six elders to sit with him on the dais, and nobody else.

She wore pale blue and long white gloves, and she sat with her knees together and her hands in her lap.

She looked up and smiled at me.

"Skye," she said. "I'm so glad you came. I've been so frightened."

"Where's your father?"

"I don't know. He took the cars. He didn't say goodbye." Her eyes filled right on time. "I'm all alone here."

I walked down the aisle until I stood over her.

Rhys stopped at the end of the row behind me, and I felt him there at my back.

"A Fernbank boy of sixteen has a bite in his arm that goes to the bone," I said. "Last night your father's wolves opened Colton from shoulder to ribs, and he took it for me."

"I'm so sorry about that."

"You said that already, on my porch."

"I mean it."

"No, you don't." I kept my voice level. "You came to my clinic at midnight in your good shoes and you offered me my own life if I'd let you stand near it. Take off your gloves."

The smile stayed on, but it stopped moving.

"I beg your pardon?"

"Colton took off one. Show the hall the other."

"I won't be treated like this."
