Chapter 24: Get In
On the first Thursday in December I stood at the curb outside Milo's school at ten to three with my hands in my coat pockets.
It was cold, and the sky was a flat clean white.
I had a job now, three days a week at the front desk of a dental office, and the hygienist who trained me said I still had the best hands she had ever seen.
I had my license, and a house with a yellow door.
I had a green van parked down the block, because Roz had driven me here and refused to leave.
"I'm just sitting," she called through the window. "I'm not watching you wait for your kid. Mind your business."
"You're eating a sandwich in my business."
"It's a very good sandwich."
A woman in a puffy blue coat walked up the sidewalk beside me and stopped.
"You're Milo's mother," she said. "From the news."
I stiffened. I had learned to.
"My daughter sits next to him," she said. "She told me he drew her a lemon tree for her birthday. She says he has a real one at home and it has two lemons coming."
"It has one," I said. "The second one fell off."
"Well." She smiled. "Thank you for what you did. I don't have the words. I just wanted to say it."
"Thank you," I said, and found I meant it more than I'd expected.
The doors opened, and children poured out in coats and backpacks.
I looked for the navy coat out of habit, and then I remembered.
