Chapter 10: Public Husband

Camille was carrying a cardboard box down Edith's front steps when the car pulled up.

Imogen saw the label on the side before she was out of the door.

*GARDEN, APRIL.*

The box went into the trunk of Camille's gray car, on top of three others.

"Hello, you two," Camille said brightly. "I didn't expect company."

Percy got out of the other side.

He had his hand on the car roof, and his face had gone smooth and cold in the time it took to cross the pavement.

"Camille," he said.

"Percy, darling, you look tired. Is she keeping you up?"

"She keeps me up all night." He did not look at Imogen. "Talking."

Camille laughed.

Imogen looked at the trunk.

"What's in the boxes?"

"Edith's photographs. For the gala slideshow." Camille shut the trunk with her hip. "She asked me to scan them. The old woman can hardly climb the stairs, and Marlow Hall wants the file by Friday."

"Edith asked you."

"Of course."

"Funny." Imogen smiled slightly. "She didn't mention it to me this morning."

For half a second Camille's face did nothing at all.

Then the front door opened above them, and Edith's cane tapped on the stone.

"Put it back," Edith said.

She stood at the top of the steps in her green coat with the housekeeper at her elbow.

"Edith, I only..."

"I did not ask you to take my garden album, Camille. I did not ask you to take anything. Put every box back in my study."

"I just wanted to save you the..."

"Now."

The color rose slowly under Camille's makeup.

She opened the trunk, lifted the first box out, and carried it up the steps past Edith without a word.
