Chapter 14: The Ivory Gown

Percy told her about the car in the hospital parking garage, standing beside the pillar with his hands in his pockets.

He kept it short.

He told it flat and in order, and he did not soften the part about the truck.

Imogen heard it out without moving.

For three years she had lain awake asking why they had been on that road at that hour.

"She cried on the phone," Imogen said. "She told you your grandmother was dying."

"Yes."

"And you turned the car around."

"I suppose I did." His voice was rough. "I don't remember."

"I do."

She looked up at him.

"You wanted to turn around before she even finished the sentence," she said. "You said, I'm sorry, my love, I have to go back."

Percy shut his eyes.

"Do you have it on tape?" Imogen asked.

"All of it."

"Then we don't play it in a garage."

She took his sleeve.

"We play it on her stage."

Hattie's kitchen smelled of burned toast.

Hattie had spread three printed copies of what was on the phone across the table and put the shoebox of letters on the chair beside her.

Dylan stood against the fridge, looking at the floor.

"Camille's crew locked the booth," Hattie said. "The hall gave her the keys because the Foundation signed the contract in her name."

"My father wired that hall in nineteen ninety-eight," Dylan said.

Everyone looked at him.

"There's a second projector room above the balcony. It's got its own feed, and nobody has opened it in ten years." He rubbed his freckled nose. "I have the key. I always had the key."

"Why didn't you say?" Hattie asked.

"I'm saying now."
