Chapter 12: The Review
I didn't say anything for a long time.
A woman came out of the laundromat with a basket on her hip and walked past the hood of the car.
"Four minutes," I said finally.
"About that."
"You never said a word. Not once in three years."
"He's my best friend. You were happy." He shrugged. "Then you weren't, and you were pregnant, and it wasn't the time."
"It's not the time now either."
"I know." He started the engine. "I told you so you'd know. Not so you'd do anything about it."
He pulled out into traffic.
I looked at his hands on the wheel all the way back to the South End.
That night I heard him through the guest room wall.
He was on the phone with somebody, speaking low.
I heard him say "December nineteenth" twice.
On Thursday morning I dressed Poppy in the yellow sleeper Gloria had bought her.
I put on the navy dress again. It fit a little better.
