Chapter 10: What Was in the Garage
At eleven that night, my phone lit up with a photo from Lacey.
It showed our garage, with the door rolled up and the light on.
Dad's SUV stood in the driveway with its back open.
A flat-screen television was already in the cargo space, wrapped in a blanket.
Under it Lacey had typed: They've been loading since nine. Mom's boxing up the silver. Dad took Grandma's sewing machine to the car. I don't understand it. Why are they moving everything out the night before a reading?
I sat up on Kenzie's couch.
"What is it?" Kenzie whispered from the floor.
I turned the screen toward her.
She read it, and she was already looking for her keys.
"Get your shoes," she said.
Alder Lane was dark and quiet when we parked at the end of the block.
The houses were all lit in the same warm squares, and ours was the only one with its garage open.
I got out and walked up the sidewalk with my phone held up and the camera running.
My father came out of the garage with a lamp in each arm.
He stopped when the beam of Kenzie's headlights hit him.
"Hazel?" he said. "What are you doing here?"
"I live here, Dad. Or I did, until you told me I cost you."
