Chapter 13: The Coat Room

I did not go back to the ballroom.

I went around through the lobby, past guests streaming out in their coats, and every one of them stared at me.

I let them.

The coat room was a narrow space behind the front desk, with a half door and a dim yellow bulb.

Savannah sat on a stool between two racks of empty hangers.

She had her shoes off and her arms wrapped around her stomach.

Her green dress was soaked dark at the hem from the snow.

Her mascara ran down both cheeks in lines.

"Ains," she said, and her face crumpled. "Don't be nice to me."

"I'm not here to be nice."

"Okay."

"Where's Caleb?"

"Gone." She laughed, and it came out as a sob. "He walked me to the back hall after the stage. He said he'd fix everything. Then he took my keys out of my bag and left."

"With your car."

"With my car, and my coat, and my phone charger."

"What did he say?"

Savannah wiped her face with the heel of her hand.

"He said he couldn't be tied to a baby while his whole life burned down. He said I should call you."

"He told you to call me."

"He said you'd come. He said you always come."

That stung more than it should have, because it was true.

The attendant at the desk, a young man with tired eyes, set a gray hotel blanket on Savannah's knees without a word.

"Thank you," Savannah whispered.

He nodded at me and went back to his stool.

"Do you have somewhere to go?" I asked.

"I gave up my apartment two weeks ago. Caleb said we'd get a place together, after the gala." She stared at the floor. "I'm an idiot."
