Chapter 14: Under His Roof

Magnus kept his word at breakfast.

He stood at the head of the long table and waited until every cup in the room was still.

The guards were there, and the Beta, the maids, and the boy who split the kindling.

"You'll hear a lot this week," he said. "Here's the true part."

"The Queen's sister is my fated mate. I knew it on the stone, and I kept it from my wife."

The housekeeper set the coffee pot down on the sideboard very gently.

"That was mine to tell her, and I didn't. It's on me. Not on her."

He looked down the table at me.

"The Council's sending the sister here until the Frost Moon. She's a guest. The Queen is the Queen. Anyone who forgets it answers to me."

He sat.

Then the kindling boy said, "Yes, my King," and everybody else said it after him.

Tilde leaned over and stole the bacon off my plate.

"That was very manly," she whispered. "I hated it. Eat something."

Kirsten arrived at four in my father's truck with seven suitcases and her mother.

She stood in the front hall and turned slowly, looking up at the beams.
