Chapter 24: One Bride
I knelt down on the attic boards beside Tilde.
I didn't touch the dress at first.
I touched the paper.
The ink had gone brown at the edges, and the handwriting was small and slanted.
I'd never seen my mother's handwriting.
My father had never kept a single letter.
"She was sick," I said. "She was sick for a year before she died. I was three."
"She wrote that when you were three?" Tilde said.
"She must have."
Magnus crouched down beside me in the dust.
He didn't say anything.
He just put his hand on the small of my back and kept it there.
"When she chooses," Tilde read again, softly. "Not when she marries. When she chooses."
"She knew him," I said.
My voice went strange.
"She knew exactly who she'd married. And she didn't want it to happen to me."
I lifted the dress out of the tissue paper.
It was ivory wool, heavy and plain, with a high collar and a row of small horn buttons.
