Chapter 12: The Milking
Six weeks later, at four in the morning, the milking pen smelled of warm milk and fresh manure.
I’d been sitting on the stool for half an hour, my forehead resting against the flank of a spotted cow, my hands moving on their own.
There were forty animals to milk, a sky still black, and a kerosene lamp lighting the stall.
Yoselin came in barefoot.
She wore a long nightgown, a wool shawl over her shoulders, and kept her hands hidden behind her back.
She stopped a yard away from me.
She was smiling in a way that scared me.
“Good morning, Daddy.”
“Good morning. What’s with that face?”
“What face?”
“The face of someone who’s swallowed a canary.”
She laughed.
She took a step closer and showed me what she’d been hiding.
A strip of white plastic, about the size of a finger.
With two pink lines.
I stopped milking.
The stream of milk stopped flowing into the bucket.
“Rosmary brought me the test last night,” she said. “I’m ten days late. I’ve been throwing up every morning for five days. And yesterday she gave me an ultrasound with her veterinary equipment.”
