Chapter 21: Opening Night

I didn't initial it.

I took a picture of the line with my phone and sent it to Ward and the detective at the same time.

Ward called me before I'd put the phone down.

"I can have the door guard strike it," he said. "One word from you."

"You're asking."

"I'm asking."

I looked at Jude's loopy signature.

"Leave it," I said. "If we strike it, she knows. Then she finds another way in, on some other night, when we're not all standing at the rail."

"And tonight?"

"Tonight she needs one thing," I said. "She doesn't need the bridge to fall. She needs me to stop the show in front of every critic in New York. One hold on opening night, and I'm the stage manager who couldn't keep a pin in."

He was quiet on the line.

"So she goes up the ladder," he said.

"And you're at the top of it."

At six the detective came in through the stage door in a rented tuxedo that didn't fit him across the shoulders.

"I'll be in the crossover behind the deck," he said. "Two of mine are on the stage door. Nobody stops her coming in. Nobody stops her going up."
