Chapter 23: Curtain
"An announcement," I said.
"That's what he told them," Joanie said. "The press office is sending a handheld down to the wings."
I looked at the clock over my desk. Seven minutes to places.
Jude was standing alone in the crossover where Bettina had left him, still in his commuter's coat.
He saw me looking and smiled.
"Joanie," I said. "When he's got that mic, it runs through your board. It stays live until I say. Not one second longer."
"Babe, I can kill it the minute he opens his mouth."
"Until I say."
"Copy, boss."
"Places, please, for act two," I said into the god mic. "Places."
The company went to their marks.
Nobody was laughing now.
The ensemble passed my desk in a line, and every one of them touched the corner of it.
The wig master started it.
On the third monitor the flyman climbed the ladder again.
He unfolded his stool by the bridge lock and sat down.
"Pin's in," he said. "And I'm sitting next to it."
Ward stood at the stage-left rail in my father's gloves. He hadn't taken them off since intermission.
