Chapter 32: One Year
On March first, a year to the day, I let myself in through the stage door at nine in the morning.
It was the day off before tech.
Nobody was called. Nobody had to be there.
The door guard looked up from his crossword.
"You're not on the sheet," he said.
"I'm never on the sheet anymore. I'm the producer."
"Then what are you doing here?"
"Same thing as always," I said, and signed in anyway.
The callboard had tomorrow's call sheet pinned to it.
"TECH, DAY ONE. 9:00 A.M. PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER:" and my old assistant's name, the one who'd called the storm with her voice shaking while I stood under the bridge.
She'd called The Last Ferry for the last four months of its run.
It closed in January, after three hundred and forty performances.
It had paid back every investor in October, and Ward paid off the house on Bank Street the same week.
He'd asked me before he did it. I'd said, "It's your house."
He'd said, "It's ours. That's why I'm asking."
The ferry deck was gone now.
The new set stood half built under the work lights.
