Chapter 12: Say It to My Face
"How long?" I said.
I held up the petition.
My hands were shaking so hard the paper rattled.
Devin didn't try to take it.
He stood in the garage doorway with the kitchen light behind him and his arms hanging at his sides.
"She told me on April 28," he said. "At the kitchen table. She had the papers and a packed car."
"Where is she?"
"Portland. Not Denver. She's been living in a house by the water with a man named Gordon Womack."
"Gordon Womack."
"A dentist. She met him at a conference in March."
I laughed, and it didn't sound like me.
"And she asked you to keep it from me."
"She asked me to wait until you graduated. Then until you had your summer. Then until the final, so she could tell you herself and bring him." He swallowed. "She said you'd take it better from her."
"And you said yes."
"I said yes."
"Why?"
"Because it was her news," said Devin. "And because you'd just finished four years of school and I thought you deserved one clean week before it all blew up."
"A week," I said. "It's been eleven."
"I know."
"You knew every night when she sent me the voice notes."
"I did."
"You knew when she told me to be nice to you."
His mouth tightened. "Yes."
"You knew," I said, and my voice finally cracked, "that I thought I was doing something terrible to her."
"Katie."
"Don't say my name like that."
"I'm sorry."
"You watched me do it, Devin. On Sunday. On Monday. You held my hips and let me think I was sitting in her husband's lap, and you let me carry that for a week."
