Chapter 10: Paranoid

Brett saw me looking.

He reached behind himself without turning, took the phone off the counter, and slid it into his back pocket.

"A guy from the gym," he said. "He wants me to cover a Saturday class."

"At this hour?"

"He's a night person."

"Is he suspicious of something?" I asked.

His face went blank for half a second.

"What?"

"You said the message was about a class. I thought I saw the word suspicious."

"You saw wrong." He laughed, a little high. "It said, is she serious about the class. He thinks I can't teach."

I smiled at him.

It was the smile that had been getting me through the week.

"Let's eat," I said.

I ate every bite of his birthday sauce, and drank two glasses of the wedding Chianti.

He watched me, hopeful and anxious.

At ten I said I had cramps and went upstairs.

He came to bed at eleven, kissed my shoulder, and was asleep by eleven twenty.

At eleven forty a text came in.

It was from Tony.

Outside. End of your street. Not at your door.

I lay with the phone against my chest.

I hadn't answered anything from him since the lumber yard.

I got out of bed, put on jeans and a coat over my pajama top, and went down the stairs in my socks.

The Volvo sat under the last streetlight with its engine off.

I got into the passenger seat and shut the door.

"I told you not to follow me."

"I didn't follow you," Tony said. "I sat here for an hour."

"That's worse."

"Probably."

He didn't look at me.

His hands were on the wheel, and his knuckles were pale.

"Say it," I said. "You came to say something."

"I owe you an apology for six weeks."

"You do."

"I'm sorry. I should have told you the first night. I knew it was wrong, and I did it anyway, because I wanted..." He stopped. "Because I was afraid you'd say no to me."
