Chapter 17: The Table Is Set
By Thanksgiving I had moved Dorothea's sister into a sunny room with a window, and the two of us had not missed a single night of pouring tea into the dead fern.
The turkey went into the oven at seven.
I made my mother's stuffing and her cranberries, and I wore her pearls.
At noon I handed Britt a gray uniform dress and a white apron.
"I'm not staff," she said.
"You're helping with Eli and the house," I said. "That's what Craig told everyone. Today the house is full."
She took the dress.
At one, I found her alone in the pantry, holding her phone with the screen dark against her chest.
"You're not scared," she said, quietly. "Why aren't you scared?"
"I'm very scared."
"You don't look it."
"Do you know where Craig keeps the lease on the condo at Lakeview Commons?" I said. "The one with your name on it, that begins the first of the month."
Her face went white under the freckles.
"He told you it was yours," I said. "He told you that you'd be Mrs. Granlund by Christmas."
"He didn't."
"Ask him tonight where he'd like you to sit."
She stood very still in the pantry doorway with the apron strings trailing from her hand.
I walked past her with the gravy boat.
They arrived from two o'clock on.
Craig's mother came first, in a camel coat she did not take off, and kissed the air next to my cheek.
"Joanna. You look thin."
"I'm better than I look."
"Craig has told us how you've been," she said, and patted my hand twice.
