Chapter 20: Three Suitcases
I had packed Craig's case and Britt's the night before, and Dorothea carried them in one at a time.
A black leather one, with Craig's initials on the tag.
A pink one with a scuffed corner, which was Britt's.
And a brown cardboard-sided case, very old, that had belonged to Dorothea since before I was born.
"I packed it myself," she said, standing straight beside it. "I thought I should walk out on my own feet."
"Erik will drive you to your sister's," I said. "She's expecting you."
Craig's mother pressed her fingers to her mouth.
Britt stood with her arms wrapped around herself and her mascara down her cheeks.
"Jo," she said. "I'm sorry. I didn't know about Pinecrest."
"You knew where you were sleeping," I said.
She flinched.
"But you played the recording. Take your case, Britt."
I walked to the front door and opened it.
The cold came in over the threshold.
It had been snowing since four, and my mother's lawn was white to the street, with the oak at the end of the drive wearing an inch of it on every branch.
The whole table had followed me into the hall.
Craig's boss and his wife stood close together by the coat rack.
The aunts and the uncle stood in the archway, and the cousin with the baby had come out of the sunroom with her hand on Eli's shoulder.
Erik led Craig out of the dining room with a hand around his arm.
"Let go of me," Craig said. "Mother, call someone."
