Chapter 18: The Vote

The chairman called the motion to a vote in ten minutes.

Paolo was sworn in the corridor with a notary Tommaso had brought, a living one with a license and a current stamp.

I stood by the window with my mother's hand on my back.

"She expects to win this," my mother said quietly.

"She does win this," I said. "If they remove him, her thirty-eight percent and the lenders outvote everyone."

"Then what do we do?"

"We wait for Russell."

The doors opened at ten past eleven.

He came in alone, in the same grey suit, and he did not go to his chair.

He walked to the middle of the room and stood where Paolo had stood.

"Chairman," he said. "Before you vote, I have a letter."

"Mr. Kingsley, the motion is already..."

"I resign as chief executive, effective now."

Nobody moved.

Camille's smile slipped, and she caught it and held it up again.

"That's very noble," she said. "But it doesn't change the vote, darling. You can't resign out of a motion."

"I can resign out of a company," said Russell. "That's the other thing I have."

He took a second paper from his pocket and laid it in front of the chairman.

"This is an irrevocable proxy for all of my voting shares, forty-one percent, to Bianca Ferraro. Witnessed this morning, notarized this morning. I've kept nothing back."

The chairman read it, and then read it again.

"You are giving your votes to your wife," he said.

"I'm giving them to the only person in this building who didn't lie to me," Russell said.

Camille laughed.

It was a short, high sound, and it came out wrong.
