Chapter 15: The Promise
Calvin's POV
Sixteen years ago I stood at the foot of a bed in the house on Mill Hill, and an old man told me what I would have to carry.
I was thirty, and my father stood beside me with the papers.
"You have a face that cannot keep a secret, Calvin," Russell's father said, from the pillows. "Make it learn."
"Yes, sir."
"She sits in that chair every night and asks me for nothing. Not one word of it, until she files."
He coughed, and my father held out the water.
"She is married to my son. Be kind to her, and keep your hands to yourself."
I promised.
It was the easiest thing I have ever said and the hardest thing I have ever done.
Now it was Wednesday night, and I sat in my office with the lamp on and the dividend ledger open in front of me.
Every year had a page, and every page had my signature.
I had signed sixteen of them without once reading the number at the bottom as money.
I had been reading it as time.
The street door opened below me at ten o'clock.
I knew the step before he reached the landing.
"You still keep the light on," Russell said, in my doorway. He was sober, and his tie was straight. "Like your father."
