Chapter 5: Drive

The prenuptial agreement was in the bottom of a box in the study closet, under tax folders and a broken camera.

Russell had told me for seventeen years that it was nothing I needed to worry about.

I took the box out on Thursday morning while he was at the office, and I sat on the study floor and read every page.

The agreement was short, and it said what I had always been told it said.

If we divorced I would leave with what I had brought, and I had brought a sewing machine and a student loan.

Behind the last page was another one.

It was on thick cream paper, with the letterhead of the Penfield law office across the top and a long line of small type under it.

I could not follow a word of the type, and I photographed every page and sent them to the attorney.

She called me back within the hour.

"The agreement itself is standard and not kind to you," she said. "The extra page is something else. It refers to a document held elsewhere, and I can't tell what that document does. The original and the signing record would have to be checked."

"By whom?"

"By the office that issued it. I would ask your husband's family lawyer, but I would not ask him yet."

"Why not?"

"Because anyone who tells your husband you're asking will warn him," she said. "Don't mention it to anyone. Pack what you need and be careful what you leave behind."
