Chapter 9: Monday at Nine
On Monday morning Calvin Penfield was standing on the courthouse steps in a gray overcoat, with a leather folder under his arm.
It was ten to nine, and the cold made my eyes water.
Russell had promised that my mother's bed would be gone by Monday, and I had checked my phone for the rehab center's number all morning.
Gwen had taken the day off and stood beside me with a thermos.
"You came," Calvin said.
"You said nine."
"I did." He looked at Gwen, and he nodded to her once. "Ms. Pickett."
"Mr. Penfield," Gwen said, and looked him up and down. "She's not signing anything until I say so."
"Good," he said.
My attorney arrived with a coffee and a briefcase.
She said hello to Calvin without surprise, so I understood that they had spoken.
"I called her Saturday," Calvin said, when I looked at him. "I only told her one thing. The date."
"What date?"
"Today's." He kept his eyes on the courthouse doors. "I can't tell you why it matters. If I told you, I would be breaking a promise I made sixteen years ago to a man who was dying."
"You asked me to trust you at a dinner party."
"I'm asking again."
The doors opened at nine, and I walked in between my attorney and my best friend.
I stood at the counter in the filing office and signed my name on every line.
The clerk stamped the first page, and I heard the clock on the wall behind her tick over to two minutes past nine.
