Chapter 11: What My Sister Saw

My sister read the letter twice, standing at her kitchen counter, and then set it down very gently.

"I have to tell you something," she said.

I was sitting with my hands wrapped around a mug I had not drunk from.

"I'm listening."

"Eight years ago, in April, I went to a restaurant to meet a client."

She stopped.

"Brad was there. He had a woman with him. She had a baby carrier on the chair beside her, and the carrier was empty because the baby was in his arms."

The mug was suddenly very heavy.

"The baby was only a few weeks old and had dark hair," my sister said. "He had it against his shoulder, and he looked happy."

"You never told me."

"You had lost a child that summer and were barely eating. I thought, I'm wrong. I thought, it's somebody's cousin. I told myself I'd ask him at Thanksgiving." Her voice cracked. "I never asked him. I'm so sorry, Lana."

I looked at my sister's face.

She was thirty-nine years old and she had lived with that for eight years.

I stood up and went around the counter and put my arms around her.
