Chapter 15: Thread on Your Mouth
Nolan's POV
At ten that night I was alone in the shop, hand-finishing the hem on the last of the pirate coats.
The key turned in the back door.
I knew the sound of it. She was the only other person who had one.
Lana came in with her coat still buttoned and her hair coming out of its knot.
"Junie's asleep," she said. "My sister told me to stay home. I couldn't."
"Sit."
"I don't want to sit."
She walked the length of the cutting table with one hand on its edge.
Then she told me about the bench, and the truck, and the thirteenth of December.
She took a folded paper out of her pocket and laid it on the velvet.
I read it where it lay.
Lana was seeing the costume man before Halloween.
"I met you in the school office," she said. "Now I'm in your shop at ten at night with this."
"I know."
"He wrote it in his own hand and gave it to her to sign."
"That's a man who has done this before," I said.
"He's good at it."
I put my needle down.
"What does he want at the dinner?"
"My husband wants a wife on his arm in front of his owner, the week the promotion is decided." She breathed out. "And he wants me to say yes to everything, so I look like I can be handled."
"Will you go?"
"I told my husband I would. I told him I'd bring someone."
That was the part where I should have said nothing.
"Who?"
She looked at me.
"I thought you might," she said. "If you want to. I know it isn't your fight."
