Chapter 16: Brynn's Phone

Joanna's POV

The phone was warm from Brynn's hands.

I took it, and nobody in the garage moved.

"Brynn," Connor said, very gently. "Whatever you think you read..."

"Don't talk to me." Brynn wiped her face with her wrist.

"I read it all, Connor. Eleven weeks. I read all of it."

The screen woke under my thumb.

It was a text thread, with a contact saved as D.F.

I didn't need to ask who that was.

A woman at the dealership had signed all of Connor's financing papers for six years.

I scrolled up.

Connor's messages ran long, and they were fond and ugly.

I read one aloud, because Brynn was watching me and she needed to hear it in someone else's voice.

"'B is the face. She'll cry on cue. Once the filing is done she goes back to the library, and nobody thanks a tutor.'"

Nobody in the garage said anything.

I read another.

"'Sat at her Thursday session. She thinks I'm in love. Women her age believe anything if you carry their coffee.'"

"I wrote that to keep D.F. calm," Connor said, too quickly. "She was jealous. You know how people get."

"You wrote it to D.F.," Brynn said. "Calling me a prop."

"Baby."

"I wore her dress," Brynn said, and her voice cracked. "You told me it was a surprise for the school. You told me it was a joke."

She looked at me, her whole freckled face a mess.

"I didn't know about the recording," she said. "I swear. I knew you'd planned the kiss. I thought you wanted to hurt her, a little, so she'd leave quietly."

"That's what you thought," Abraham said, from beside the door.

"I'm not asking to be forgiven."

"Good," I said.
