Chapter 5: Bluewater

The lawyer's first instruction on Monday was short.

"Find out what he's telling people," she said. "Then get it in writing."

By two that afternoon I was standing in the lobby of Bluewater Aquatics with a folder under my arm.

I had been there a hundred times.

I had sat in those bleachers through every meet since Dalton took the job, and I had never once come to find him without calling first.

The front desk was empty.

A man in a damp gray T-shirt came out of the office with a clipboard, saw me and stopped.

"You're Monica," he said.

"I am."

"Keith Ashworth. I own the place." He held out a big hand, and I shook it. "Your husband has a framed picture of you on his desk. Or he did, till last month."

"Where's it gone?"

"I assumed you two had split. I haven't seen it since the summer."

I kept my face still.

"Is Dalton here?"

Keith looked at the wall clock.

"It's two ten. He left at two."

"Left for where?"

"He leaves at two every day. I figured it was for you."

"For me."

"He told us you left him in June." Keith put the clipboard on the desk. "He said it was hard on him, and he asked if he could cut his hours to be there for his friends. I said yes."

I laughed.

It came out of me before I could stop it, high and short.
