Chapter 11: The Envelope in the Hallway

Keaton opened the door.

Grady stood in the corridor in yesterday's shirt with his tie pulled loose.

Summer was beside him in her pink robe. A security guard waited behind them with his hands folded.

Doors were opening up and down the eighteenth floor.

"There she is," Grady said. His eyes were red. "Cage 18 is my property, Claire. You took something out of it."

"I took my vitamins."

"You took a clinic envelope."

I stood very still.

He had never said the word clinic to me in four years.

"How do you know what's in the box?" I asked.

His mouth shut.

"The gate log says someone opened my cage tonight," he said. "I want whatever you've got."

"Which part?"

"Give me the envelope, Claire."

"Fine."

I held it up so the guard could see.

A man in a bathrobe from 1802 leaned out of his door. The woman from apartment twelve was in the elevator lobby in her coat, on her way to the night shift.

Everyone was looking.

I peeled the tape off the flap and took out the first page.

"This is a lab report from Lakeshore Reproductive Medicine," I said. "It's dated four years ago in March, three months after we started trying for a baby."

"Claire, stop," Grady said.

"It has your name on it."

I read the line at the bottom in a clear, flat voice.

"Findings consistent with severe male factor infertility. Natural conception is unlikely without treatment."

The corridor went quiet.
