Chapter 13: Section Four

Grady stood in the elevator lobby with his phone in his hand and didn't move.

"Open it," I said.

"It's nothing. She's trying to scare me."

"Then it won't hurt to open it."

His thumb shook as he tapped the screen.

I stepped close enough to read over his arm.

The email had one attachment, a scanned deed with a county stamp across the top.

Summer had marked the page with a yellow flag.

SECTION 4. The Grantor, Grady Lindell, transfers all of his interest in unit 1806 to Summer Eberle, effective on signing.

His signature sat at the bottom.

The date was five weeks ago.

"What is this?" I said.

Grady didn't answer.

"Grady. What is this?"

"It was a stack of papers." His voice was hoarse. "Summer said they were for the baby. A trust. Her lawyer prepared them. She had flags on every page that needed a signature."

"You signed my home away without reading it."

"I read the first page."

"It's my father's money."

"It was half," he said. "Only my half."

"There's no only."

Keaton stood behind me with his arms folded. He didn't say a word, and I was glad.

I took the phone out of Grady's hand and scrolled down.

A second stamp. RECORDED. A date from last Friday.

Summer had walked it to the county office herself, the day after I carried the crib down to the lobby.

"She's an owner," I said. "Of 1806."

"She can't be."

"She is. She and I own the apartment together now."

Grady's face went slack.

He said, in a small voice, "I did that for the baby."

"The baby isn't yours."

"I know."

He said it so quietly that I almost felt sorry for him.

Then I remembered the bathroom floor, and I didn't.
