Chapter 4: The Other Father

Keaton's couch was short, and the blanket smelled like laundry soap.

I slept three hours anyway.

In the morning he put a plate of toast on the counter and a glass of water beside it.

"I took your suitcase to the door," he said. "You're signed in until midnight. Where are you going?"

"My doctor."

"Okay. Do you know a carpenter named Tom Radley?"

I stopped with the toast halfway to my mouth.

"The attendant said he came to the building."

"He did the shelving on seventeen last year. Good guy. Shop on Kinzie Street." Keaton shrugged. "I thought you'd want to know. I heard your whole lobby speech, by the way. Half the building did."

"I wasn't trying to make a speech."

"That's why it worked."

I wrote down the address.

My obstetrician's office was on the ninth floor of a building near the river.

I lay on the exam table in a paper gown with my heart pounding.

The doctor moved the wand across my stomach.

A small, fast sound filled the room.

It was a quick, steady flutter.

My eyes filled up so fast I couldn't stop them.

"That's your baby," the doctor said. "A hundred and sixty beats a minute. Everything looks right on schedule."

I put my hand over my mouth.

"Does the father know?" she asked gently. "I'd like him at the next one if he wants to come."

"Not yet."

"Take your time."

She printed a new picture and slid it into my hand.

I held it in the elevator all the way down.

Kinzie Street was lined with old brick warehouses. A hand-painted sign hung over one door: RADLEY WOODWORK.
