Chapter 16: The Ring

I came back from the pharmacy on Friday morning with a bag of prenatal vitamins and a lemon tart.

The elevator opened on the ninth floor, and I heard a woman crying behind Samson's door.

It was ajar, and I stopped in the hallway with the bag against my chest.

I knew the voice.

It was lower than it had been in the restroom, and it had cracked.

"Samson. Please. Two years."

I slid my phone out of my coat and pressed the red dot.

Then I stood where I couldn't be seen, and I listened.

"You can't come into my home, Quinn," Samson said.

"I came to bring you this."

There was a small clink.

"It was on the tablecloth when I left. I took it back. I wore it on the plane, Samson. I wore it on my finger, because I wanted you to know I'm still yours."

"Take it off the table."

"I'm sorry about the leave. I didn't know my father would do that."

"He told me it wasn't personal."

"He did it because I cried to him. I was so humiliated." Her voice trembled. "I can fix it. One phone call, and you're back by Monday."

"On what terms?"

She didn't answer.

"On what terms, Quinn?"

"You come home. We don't talk about Ethan or his mother or the island. We just go on."

"And Hannah?"

"She'll be taken care of," Quinn said. "She'll have everything she needs. Nobody wants to hurt her."

I felt my own hand close over my stomach under the coat.
