Chapter 20: The Microphone

Quinn had said yes, and the ballroom was still clapping when Bernice found me with her eyes.

She came back to the microphone, glowing, and held up one white-gloved hand.

"And there's one more piece of good news," she said. "One of our family's dearest friends has come tonight with something to share. Hannah, dear. Come up."

I felt three hundred heads turn.

"Don't," Samson said under his breath.

"I'm going."

"She wants you to sign."

"I know what she wants."

I stood up, and picked the ivory folder off the table, and walked down the aisle between the white gowns.

The green dress swished.

My heart was going like the one on the monitor, a hundred and sixty at least.

Ethan was standing at the side of the stage, and when he saw the folder in my hand, his shoulders relaxed.

He thought I'd come to give in.

Bernice took my elbow at the top of the steps, and squeezed it, and whispered, "Good girl."

"Thank you," I said.

I stepped up to the microphone.

The lights were hot.

Beyond them, the ballroom was a sea of faces, the aunts with their hands clasped, the tearoom women, a few hundred strangers in diamonds.

"Good evening," I said.

My voice came back to me off the walls.

"I'm Hannah Audley. For five years I was Ethan Sorley's wife."

Nobody moved.

"Bernice asked me to bring this up."

I held up the folder.

"It's a house, a trust, and an allowance. In exchange, when my daughter is born in the spring, I sign her over to Ethan and Quinn."
