Chapter 7: Sunday Dinner

Bernice's dining table seated fourteen, and every chair was full when Samson and I walked in.

I wore a loose green dress, because I wasn't giving her the satisfaction of anything tight.

Samson wore a dark suit and carried a velvet box in his left pocket.

The room went quiet in sections.

Ethan's uncles stopped talking.

His aunts put down their forks.

At the far end, in a seat that had once been mine, sat Quinn, in cream silk, with a glass of sparkling water.

She went white when she saw who was holding my arm.

"Hannah," Bernice said, and rose from the head of the table with the bright look of a hostess whose party has just gotten better. "You came. And you brought a friend."

"Samson Weir," he said. "Quinn's fiancé."

Nobody breathed.

"Former," Quinn said quickly, to the table. "Very much former. He's not well."

"Please sit," Bernice said, in the voice of a woman who wanted everyone to see how reasonable she was. "Both of you. We're family here."

The only two empty chairs were next to each other, across from Ethan.

I sat.

He looked at my face and then at Samson's hand on the back of my chair, and something moved in his jaw.

"Han," he said. "You didn't need to bring anyone."

"I'm not alone," I said. "That's the point of bringing someone."

A cousin snorted into a napkin and tried to hide it.

Dinner was roast lamb.

I ate the potatoes and nothing else, and I pretended I didn't see Bernice watching me do it.
