Chapter 12: Water

Brooke picked the place, a parking structure behind a hospital on the lake, at seven the next morning.

"Alone," she had written. "Please. She has someone watching my phone."

Rowan wanted to come.

I told him he could drive me and wait in the van two levels up, with the engine off and his phone in his hand.

He did not argue.

He only said, "Leave the recorder on," and clipped it inside my bag strap himself, without touching me.

The garage was nearly empty.

Brooke's small white car sat on the third level next to a concrete pillar, and she was standing beside it in her long dark coat.

She looked worse than she had at the lake house.

Her bob was flat, her eyes were swollen, and she held herself up by the car door.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

I stopped ten feet away.

"I'm not here to be nice to you."

"I know. You don't have to be." She wiped her eyes with the back of her glove. "You asked me once why I was kind to you, back when you were doing the rounds. The ginger candies. The drives. Do you remember?"

"You were my friend."

"I was your friend. I meant all of it. That's the worst part." She drew a breath. "Leah, your shots were water."

I didn't understand her.

"The injections," she said. "The ones Rupert gave you every night. They were saline. Salt water. There was no medicine in them."

My knees went loose.

"That's not possible. The clinic prescribed them. They came in boxes with labels."

"They came from Marianne."
