Chapter 21: The Lake House Table
Rupert knelt on the ballroom floor with his hands out, and I looked down at the top of his head.
It was the same suit and the same pose as in the photographs.
"Leah," he said. "Please. I'll say it all. I'll go to anyone."
"You knelt like that in front of her," I said.
Behind him, three hundred phones were pointed at us.
"Get up, Rupert."
"I can't. Not until you."
"Then stay there." I stepped down off the stage past him. "I'm not the one who needs you on the floor."
He stayed.
Nobody helped him up.
The last I saw, as Rowan took my arm at the doors, the oldest man on the board was walking toward him with a hard face.
The lake house looked the way it had in October, with the long gray porch and the lawn gone brown.
The white dining room still held the table for fourteen.
I walked into it on Monday afternoon with Rowan at my left and my lawyer at my right.
She had pinned her white braid up for the occasion.
The Kessling relatives were already seated.
The aunt and uncle were there, with Brooke's mother in a gray coat and two cousins.
Rupert's grandfather sat in his wheelchair at the head of the table.
At the far end sat the silver-haired lawyer with a stack of documents.
Marianne sat beside him, very quiet.
She wore no pearls today.
Her hair hadn't been done, and she kept her hands in her lap.
"The board voted at ten," the old man said. "Six to nothing. Marianne has stepped down as president and as trustee. The hospital foundation took her name off its donor wall this morning."
