Chapter 20: The Strip District

Nick's POV

On the first Saturday in October the shop sent me to the Strip District.

I had a folding table, a pump and a rack of used bikes.

The owner called it outreach.

I called it standing on Penn Avenue for six hours while people told me about their uncles' Schwinns.

I had a kid's rear derailleur in my lap.

A crowd went by on both sides of me, shoulders and strollers and paper bags of peppers.

The street smelled of fish, coffee and fried dough, and a man at the cheese stall kept shouting prices.

I was not looking for her.

I want that on the record too.

I had known since May that the produce wholesaler where she worked ran a Saturday stand.

The logo had been on the shirt she wore to the shop with the flat tire.

The stand sat thirty feet down from my spot, with crates of apples and a hand-painted sign.

I had asked for the spot and not told the owner why.

She had been there since eight, in a work apron with her sleeves rolled and her hair pinned up.
