Chapter 23: Sunday Dinner
Dee's POV
My mother's dining room table seats eight if two of them are children, and on the third Sunday of October it held nine.
She had put Nick at the corner, next to me, and given him the good fork.
I had not asked her to.
She had looked him over at the door in her lavender cardigan, from his clean flannel shirt down to his work boots.
She said, "You're the bicycle."
"Yes, ma'am," Nick said.
"Come in. You're thin."
"He's not thin, Ma," I said.
"He's thin in the face," she said.
Nick's eyes found mine over her head, and I saw him trying not to laugh.
Jackie's kids sat across from us in their church clothes.
My brother-in-law carved the ham.
Jackie sat at the far end with her chin on her fist and a grin she was making no effort to hide.
"What happened to your nose?" my nephew said.
"Careful," said my brother-in-law.
"Nobody ever asks me," Nick said. "It's a good question."
"Did someone punch you?"
"A curb," said Nick.
"Did you win?"
"The curb did."
My nephew considered this and decided it was the best thing he had heard all week.
