Chapter 8: The Chair
The tattoo shop on Butler Street had been closed for an hour when he let me in through the back.
"It's, um, it's kind of a mess," the apprentice said.
"Everyone's place is a mess."
"No, I mean this is where I work, and it's, I don't know why I'm telling you."
He was twenty-one, white, from Lawrenceville, with a pale thin face and both forearms covered in his own early work.
Some of the lines wobbled.
He had a lip ring that he kept touching with his tongue, and ears that went red every time I looked at him.
The shop smelled of green soap and cold metal.
Flash sheets covered the walls, daggers and roses and a hundred swallows.
A single lamp on an arm burned over the black vinyl chair at the center.
It was a big chair, with padded arms and a headrest and a lever on the side.
"You can sit in it," he said. "People do. They like it."
"I'd rather see it with you in it."
"Me?"
"You," I said. "Sit."
He sat.
He sat so fast that the chair sighed.
Then he put both hands on the arms and looked up at me.
I took off my jacket and dropped it on the floor.
"You've never really been in charge of anything, have you?" I said.
"I'm in charge of the sweeping," he said.
"Is that all?"
"And the stencils. And the coffee."
"Good," I said. "Tonight you're in charge of nothing."
His breath hitched.
I knelt on the cold concrete in front of the chair, between his boots, and put my palms on his knees.
