The school called at 2:51, and I reached the gate at 2:58 with my work flats in my hand.
I had run the last four blocks.
The kindergarten door stood open, with a line of parents waiting on the sidewalk for dismissal.
My mother stood on the top step in her red coat.
She held a shopping bag with a stuffed dog sticking out of it.
She smiled at the teacher.
"I am his grandmother," she said, loud enough for the sidewalk. "I have driven all this way."
"I'm sorry, ma'am," the teacher said.
She was a small woman with a lanyard and a very steady voice.
"The pickup list has three names, and yours isn't one of them."
"Because my daughter is spiteful."
"Then your daughter can call and add you."
"I shouldn't need her permission to hold my own grandson!"
The parents on the sidewalk had stopped talking.
One mother pulled out her phone, and I saw her thumb find the camera.
