The Sunrise Motel still smelled of cigarettes and carpet cleaner.
I knocked on the dented door of Room Twelve, and this time I did not stand on the walkway first.
My mother opened it in a cardigan I had never seen.
Her copper hair had grown out grey at the roots.
She held the door as if she expected to be told to leave.
"Frannie."
"I brought you something to read."
I handed her the hospital letter, and she read it standing in the doorway.
Her lips moved on the figure.
"A hundred thousand dollars," she said. "In my name."
"It's in your name. It isn't yours."
"Who?"
"Eugene Holloway. It cost him something, and he didn't ask for anything back."
"You asked him for a hundred thousand six years ago, and that is where it went."
She stared at the page, and I watched her understand it.
She had asked for money for a grandchild she had never met.
The money had gone to people with sick hearts.
"What do you want?" she said, hoarse.
"Terms."
I came into the room without being asked, and I did not sit.
