Chapter 16: Appeal
The guild master gave us one hearing.
The full council, at dawn, before the Hall opened for the day.
By the time I walked in, masked, hunters stood three deep along the walls.
The six old hunters of the council sat in a row behind the guild master's table.
The Ridge wolves had the front benches.
Hester sat in the middle of them in her white fox cape, sipping from her little cup.
Brannon stood behind her with one hand on her shoulder.
He looked at my hood, and then at my chin, and then away.
"Gray Knife," the guild master said. "Your team is struck. You asked to be heard. Be quick."
I stepped into the middle of the floor.
"Hall law says a hunter who brawls in Hunt week loses his place."
"It does."
"Then tell me who brawled."
"The man who swung first was paid by the Ridge," I said. "He swung a bench at a woman's head from behind. My partner caught it."
"And threw a man through a window."
"He threw the man who swung the bench through a window." I turned to the walls. "If catching a bench is brawling, half this Hall brawls every market day."
That got a louder laugh, deep and rumbling, from the back corner.
The Hall's champion stood there with his arms crossed, his stubby horns scraping the low beam.
"Gray Knife threw me three falls to one," the bull said. "Fair throws. Gray Knife doesn't start fights. He finishes them. I'd hunt behind him."
The council murmured.
Brannon's hand tightened on Hester's shoulder.
"Yarrow," the guild master said. "You have anything to say?"
Kell stepped up beside me.
He'd slept by the fire all night with his feet in my lap, and he was standing straighter than he had in days.
