Chapter 7: Page Four

Moody Motors had a showroom the size of an airport hangar, and at noon it was full of reporters.

Dwight stood on a stage in front of a red banner, with Lyle Draper at his elbow.

Bryony came in through the side door with Holbrook, and nobody noticed until the video started.

It played on a screen forty feet wide.

It was dark and shaky, and it showed a bed, and a man pulled down on top of a woman who grabbed his collar.

"Staged," Lyle said into the microphone, smiling. "Filmed in my grandmother's own house last night. The bride knew I was at the door, so she put on a show."

"That's a lie," Holbrook said, loud, from the back.

Every head turned.

Dwight pointed.

"There she is!" he said. "The girl who took a billionaire in a hotel lounge. Her mother signed with me first. Ask her."

Bryony walked down the center aisle.

She had her bag over her shoulder, and she did not hurry.

"I'd like to," she said. "I'd like to ask her. But I don't have to, because Mr. Draper's lawyer pulled the loan file this morning."

She took a folded paper from her bag.

"Page four," she said, and walked up onto the stage.

Dwight reached for it.

She stepped back, and read it into the microphone.

"The borrower, Rosalind Ridley, agrees to give her daughter Bryony in marriage to the lender, Dwight Moody, on or before the first of March. On the day of the marriage, the principal of three hundred eighty thousand dollars is forgiven."

The showroom went silent.

"My mother didn't borrow money from this man," Bryony said. "She sold me for it."

A reporter in the front row said, quietly, "Oh my God."

"He sat across a table from me, and told me to quit my job, and told me to give him a son. Not a girl. And yesterday, my mother texted me to stay until four."

She turned to face Dwight.

"You bought a wife with a bakery loan, and you wanted everyone to think I'd been the one chasing money."

"That's a lie. It's a contract."
