Chapter 10: Two A.M.

"What are you doing here at two in the morning?" I said.

"I came to return your cardigan," Bianca said, and held up a mustard-yellow bundle. "You left it at my place in August."

"You have a key to my apartment."

"I lived here three years, Cass. You never asked for it back."

She walked past Desmond to the kettle and filled it at the tap.

The gesture said everything: she knew where the mugs were.

Desmond stood with his bare arms folded and his water glass on the counter.

"Ms. Thorsby," he said. "You're not welcome in this house."

"It isn't your house, Desmond," Bianca said sweetly. "And I'm worried about her."

"About what?"

She turned and looked at me, and her eyes were wet and kind.

I knew it was a performance, and it still got into my chest.

"Cass has never told you about the list," she said.

"What list?"

"When we were twenty-one, she made a list of what she wanted from a husband. A rich one, with a house on the lake."

"I made that list as a joke," I said. "You wrote half of it."

"She tells everyone it's a joke."

Bianca pulled her phone out of her coat pocket, thumbed it open and held it toward Desmond.

"I didn't want to show you. I really didn't."

Desmond took the phone.

I stepped around the counter and read it over his arm.

It was a screenshot of a conversation between her and me, dated the night of the gala.
