Chapter 14: The Bar Photo
The photographer's gallery arrived at 5:48 in the morning, six hundred and twelve frames in a folder.
We sat in the penthouse kitchen with Ford's laptop on the counter and a pot of coffee going cold.
Desmond scrolled with one hand and held my fingers with the other.
"Ballroom, ballroom, the ice sculpture, my uncle asleep in a chair," he said.
"Start at midnight," Ford said. "The lobby bar. Anyone who left the ballroom would pass it."
Frame 311 showed a bartender polishing a glass.
Frame 322 showed two men laughing over whiskey.
Frame 340 was the one.
The time stamp in the corner said 12:55:14 a.m.
A woman sat on a stool at the end of the lobby bar.
Her back was to the camera and her face was turned toward the elevators.
She wore a silver slip dress I had never seen and a coat folded over her knee.
