Chapter 23: Christmas Eve
We came out of the service door hand in hand as the real call filled the ballroom.
"I'm so happy for you," said Bianca's voice from forty speakers, warm and bright and wide awake. "Say the scar part again. Slowly."
Two hundred faces had turned toward the Thorsby table, not toward us.
Nobody saw me at first.
Bianca stood at the end of her table with a microphone in her hand.
Her mouth was half open on a speech she had practiced for ten weeks.
Behind her, the high white screens that had been showing a slow reel of last year's galas flickered, and the first picture came up.
The bar photo, a woman on a stool with a flute in her hand.
"Turn that off," Bianca said, into the microphone, and her voice boomed across the room.
"Turn it off, it's a mistake."
The second picture came up, the 12:58 text.
A murmur ran around the tables.
On the speakers, the cheerful voice said, "Hum it for me, honey, I want to picture it."
