Chapter 6: Sunday Dinner

The Ashcroft house on East Seventy-Third had a front door the height of a small church.

Mitchell stood on the steps with his hand raised toward the bell and did not press it.

"Seven years," he said.

"You can wait in the truck."

"No." He lowered his hand. "I'd just like it noted that I didn't want to."

I took his arm.

It was the first time I had touched him on purpose, and I felt him go stiff and then very still.

"It's noted," I said, and pressed the bell.

A butler opened the door and went pale when he saw Mitchell.

The dining room held a table for twenty-four.

Every chair was full.

I saw a judge I recognized from a hotel charity dinner, a senator's wife in pearls, an old man with a cane, and a row of faces glittering in candlelight.

Constance sat at the head of the table.

She did not stand.

"Mitchell," she said. "How good of you to come."

Her voice could have chilled the wine.

Lawrence rose at the other end and came around the table with his arms open.

"Mitch. You came." He embraced his brother, and Mitchell stood in it like a man being measured for a coffin. "And Lana. You look wonderful. Sit by me."

"I'll sit here," I said, and took the empty seat beside Mitchell.

Lawrence's smile never moved.

He had put us at the far end, among the cousins.

Dinner started with soup, and the table talked about everything except the two of us.

I kept my spoon moving.

Beneath the cloth, Mitchell's knee pressed against mine, and it wasn't an accident, because neither of us moved it.
